The Yards

As Christmas approaches the businesses are gearing up for a hectic few months, with a ‘Christmas at the Yards’ event in November seeing a weekend of drink, food, music and stalls from additional retailers in the central courtyard area.

Towards the bottom end of the town centre close to the library is The Yards. Nestled behind the shops that line the outside edge; M’s gallery, Ashgate hospice shop and Number 10 The Tea Room there’s a whole host of alleyways and independent shops run by enthusiastic owners and offering a unique selection of products and services to explore.

This area has an interesting history. It was previously known as the Dog Kennels of Chesterfield, a well-known slum area which was demolished in the early 20th century to make way for Markham Road and later the Pavements shopping Centre.

The Businesses

At The Yards today you’ll find an eclectic collection of fifteen businesses including Delightful Decor, M’s Gallery & Accessories, Tattoo HQ, Urban Flamingo and Vanishing Point Records (who all feature on the following pages). The Yards community also encompasses the independent businesses on the other side of Beetwell Street, who work together to promote the area and to offer each other support.

Many of the businesses in the Yards are fairly new, Vanishing Point Records opened in 2016 for instance, whilst on the flip side many have been there for a considerable number of years but have grown and expanded with increasing demand.
