“I love selecting new items for the shop. The best bit is getting to speak with the designer and talking to them about how they developed a design and what goes into making it.

Who are you? “I’m Emma, I’ve been living in Chesterfield for 17 years and I opened M’s gallery 13 years ago.”

What do you sell? “At M’s we specialise in handmade silver jewellery which is designed and made in the UK. We also have a number of brands such as Coeur de Lion and are proud to be the original stockists in Chesterfield of Nomination a brand we have been working with for approximately ten years.”

What’s your background? “I’ve always worked in Retail starting with a Christmas job at Woolworths. I spent 12 happy years with Woolies eventually coming to Chesterfield when the new branch opened here. “I was lucky enough to get an insight into the different elements of running a shop and 13 years ago decided I’d like to have a go myself. I liked it so much I opened my second shop M’s accessories three years ago.”

How do you select your products? “I love selecting new items for the shop. The best bit is getting to speak with the designer and talking to them about how they developed a design and what goes into making it.
“We are always searching for new designers and would love to speak with any Silversmiths who live locally and design and make their own work.”

What’s the most important difference between you and the retail chains? “I think what makes independent businesses special is that you get to know your customers. You can spend time getting to know what they want. I love that I sometimes see items that I know will be perfect for some of our loyal customers.”

What’s best about being part of the Yards? “The Yards is a really great place to have my shops as it’s such a thriving area of independent shops and cafes. I love that most of the businesses are focussed on working together to let everyone know what great independents we have here in Chesterfield.”

What are you most proud of? “I’m so proud to be part of a fabulous team who support me and my dream. Their support has allowed me to step back a little to have a family. Special mention to Julia who has been my work colleague/friend/dispenser of excellent childcare tips for 10 years.

“Having such a great team means we have a large number of loyal customers who we’ve been lucky enough to help celebrate milestones in their lives.”
